Portraits. "People Character Capture"
What a menagerie of characters are out there. I absolutely hate being on the front end of a camera.
The character of people really interest me. So much is revealed at that micro-moment just before the shutter curtain falls. The trick, I have found, is to talk to, no with, the subject. Ask about their day, yes make them feel at ease, but more importantly, watch, listen, learn and observe; see that relaxed character come through. It's there, even in the most hurried, stressed, annoyed or frustrated face, its there.
My job is to record it then.
Whether in the Studio, or on location, lighting is our primary tool, and the quality and direction of it, is the most important element of the portrait shoot. Yes digital technology has made general photography more accessible to more of us, and yes the quality of auto image capture has become easier for most to get a decently exposed image.
"There are far more elements to a portrait than a correctly exposed image".
